The LinkedIn Strategy That Gets Sales Pros Noticed by Executives

You don't need 10,000 followers. You need the right 100 people to see the right content. Here's how.

Most advice about building a personal brand on LinkedIn is written for people trying to become influencers. You are not trying to become an influencer. You are trying to get promoted, get recruited, or get taken seriously by the executives who decide your future. That is a completely different game, and it requires far less than you think.

Forget the follower count

You do not need 10,000 followers. You need the right 100 people to see the right content consistently. Your VP, your VP's peers, the hiring leaders at the companies you'd want to work for, the executives in your industry. That's the audience. If they see you demonstrate sharp thinking every week, the follower number is irrelevant.

Build your internal brand and your external brand at the same time. They reinforce each other, and both are just reputation, made visible.

Post like an operator, not a salesperson

The fastest way to look junior is to post motivational quotes and "crushing it" updates. The fastest way to look like a future leader is to share how you think about the business. A few formats that work:

  • The lesson learned. A specific thing that went wrong, what you took from it, and what you'd do differently. Failures, told honestly, are more credible than wins.
  • The reframe. Take a common belief in your industry and offer a sharper way to see it. "Everyone thinks X. Here's why I think it's actually Y."
  • The behind-the-glass view. How you actually approach a hard part of the job: a tough negotiation, a stalled deal, a coaching conversation. Specifics signal competence.
  • The genuine question. Posed to people more senior than you. It shows you're curious and pulls the exact audience you want into your comments.

Consistency beats virality

One thoughtful post a week for a year will do more for your career than one viral post that gets forgotten in a month. The point is not reach. The point is that when an executive thinks about who's ready for the next level, your name comes with a track record of visible, credible thinking attached.

Visibility matters. The best work in the world does nothing for your career if the people who decide never see it. LinkedIn, used like an operator, is simply how you make sure they do.
